About Dr. Wan Srihani Wan Mohamed is currently a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Architecture, FRSB, UPM and has been serving in the academic line since 1998 when she first joined UiTM as a Lecturer. She has a long-time passion for teaching in architecture. Even when she was a practicing architect from 1996 until 1998, she taught construction subjects part-time, before joining UPM as a full-time faculty member in 1999. She specialises in self help housing and alternative housing through self build housing system looking at prefabrication of local resources using low technology for low-income groups in the rural areas of Malaysia. Her doctoraL thesis, a design of RTA (Ready-To-Assemble) System has been patented under UM and UPM. She has been involved as an urban design consultant for urban development projects such as the Penang Heritage Inventory, Revitalization of Putrajaya Lakefront and currently Kuala Lumpur Industrial Plan. Her expertise and experience have been sought by other universities who engaged her as external assessor, jury for numerous architecture and urban design-related competitions, and speaker at international conferences. Wan Srihani’s passion in developing alternative technology construction processes led to the establishment of the Teratak Semai program by the Community Architecture Research Team (CART). From 2015 to 2020, Wan Srihani led the team of more than 150 staff and volunteers in completing over 60 units of houses for the Orang Asli community. She envisions the program as a manifestation of the principles of responsible architecture, offering a new rapid-construction approach to enable low-income groups to build affordable and scalable homes using locally-sourced materials, at the same time retaining their traditional architecture style. As at the end of 2018, Teratak Semai has secured further funding support, enabling the implementation of the new Balai Desa Semai project, a 600 sq. ft. community hall with space for a children’s library. She is also actively engaged with CART members, manufacturers in developing designs for affordable housing. As an active member of the MERCY Malaysia Technical Team (MMTT), she has represented MERCY in Pakistan for final handover assessment of a rural hospital in Layyah District, and attended international workshops that have contributed to the improvement of her knowledge and skills.
